Hybrid News: Audi A8 hybrid gets 2.0 turbo engine
Rumours of two-litre engines finding home in a E-segment limousine have been making its round over the last four or five years and now it is reality with the 2.0-turbo Audi A8 hybrid.
The blown engine drives the wheels together with an electric motor that is sandwiched between the engine and transmission.
In concept the parallel hybrid drive system is similar to Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) but how it actually works may not be the same.
The specifications and details are after the jump
The engine is a four cylinder that is rated at 211HP and 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) of torque, while the disc-shaped electric motor develops 40 kW (54HP) and 210 Nm (154.89 lb-ft).
Audi says the short-term system output is rated at 245-horsepower and 480 Nm (345.03 lb-ft) of torque.
The 18 hybrid will hurl to 100km.h in 7.7 seconds and should achieve a top speed of 235km/h.
Fuel consumption, as measured using the EU cycle is said to be under 6.4 liters per 100 km (36.8mpg US or 44.1mpg UK), and CO2 emissions below 148 grams per km (238.2 g/mile).
The A8 Hybrid is designed to run on pure electric at speeds up to 100km/h, this is really high speed for a relatively small hybrid motor. In contrast, the Toyota Prius can only manage 45km.h in pure electric mode.
On the down side it can only stay at 60km/h on electric power for just three kilometres.
Driving modes include EV for electric drive priority, D for automatic computer-optimised driving and and S-mode for sportier drives.
